Sidney could possibly be the best equipped of all the villages on the Saanich Peninsula. In fact, it’s gotten so big over the years it’s officially incorporated as a town. Spend a day exploring and you’ll soon realize you wont need to drive far to get your errands done; the town features a wide array of shops and amenities. Considering the major bus routes, a main ferry terminal and a nearby international airport, it’s definitely one of the most convenient towns to reside in. A life in Sidney is one worth dreaming about. Given the amazing amenities in Sidney it is surprisingly affordable and could possibly be one of the last remaining affordable areas on the South Island for young families looking to take root.
A Brief History Lesson:
The history and name of Sidney is somewhat debated, but to summarize the most relevant point: the town is famous for it’s marine life and boating enthusiasts – hence it’s slogan “Sidney by the Sea” – and is a very family oriented area. It’s hard to describe, but no matter where you are in this town you will be overcome by an instinctual sense that the ocean is nearby. Whether it’s the cooler breeze or the smell of salt water, something gives Sidney a particular feeling. Safety, convenience, beauty; it’s all here in Sidney.
Recreation
There are countless options for recreation from lawn bowling to yoga. All within the heart of town you’ll find many options from indoor centres to the several parks which also host the local soccer and baseball communities. Within a quick 5 minute drive you’ll find yourself at the doorstep of two massive golf courses or the Panorama Rec Centre. Given the generally flat terrain and low buildings this makes for spectacular mountain views which can be seen from almost anywhere you look. The town also recently built a Community Wellness Park, which features outdoor fitness equipment to use free of charge!
Amenities
Living in Sidney means having quick access to many transportation options. The public transit system is well serviced in this area offering many express busses to Victoria and the southern communities. The Victoria International Airport is within arms reach and the BC Ferries are within a minutes drive; a necessity for those who commute on a regular basis.
Local Events
The 2 day annual festival, Sidney Days, takes place all over town on June 30th and Canada Day. The entire Saanich Peninsula can’t help but get involved in the festivities. The major attraction would be the enormous fireworks display that happens just off the shore on the eve of Canada Day. Don’t let the size of the town fool you; some people believe that these fireworks give Victoria’s a run for its money.
