Oak Bay is a relaxing seaside community with miles of of beautiful beaches, boutique shops and many amenities. Rife with history and charming nature, Oak Bay’s serene atmosphere and well kept streets and neighbourhood make it an attractive place for many families. For centuries, aboriginal people lived at the shores of Oak Bay harvesting food from the landscape and nearby sea. There’s actually quite a few sites that still contain evidence of these groups. European settlers arrived in the 1700’s and by 1843 Fort Victoria was established. in 1906 Oak Bay was incorporated. In fact, JD Pemberton of Pemberton Holmes was a member of the first Council. The town was mapped out and planned for future development, and the waterworks, police and fire stations were established in this largely farm-based land in Oak Bay. Between 1945 and 1960, under agreement with the municipality, the Hudson’s Bay Company developed their remaining lands into serviced residential properties. The early 1960’s saw the last push of substantial development in Oak Bay, with Oak Bay Marina being established and the final residential neighbourhoods.
Most famously known, The Oak Bay Tea Party is an annual summer event held at Willows Park on the first weekend in June. Activities at this popular family event include an air show, bathtub race, parade through Oak Bay, carnival, free live music, raffle draw and so much more. The summer brings on the Oak Bay night markets which is comprised of hundreds of local vendors and artisans. Local music , face painting, arts and crafts, and so much more is enjoyed during these markets. The annual car show attracts many to the Oak Bay Ave strip where you can view exotic and collectable cars of all eras. There’s so much to look forward to in Oak Bay.
Recreation never comes up short, as Oak Bay offers both outdoor and indoor activities. The Oak Bay, Henderson, and Monterey Recreation Centres makes it easy to pick the closest facility. Hockey, Soccer, Swimming, Fitness, Tennis, can all be enjoyed in Oak Bay. For outdoor activities you’ll be pleased to find many beaches, pathways, accessible neighbourhood trails and beautiful cycling routes to view the breathtaking scenery nearby. Oak Bay is a fantastic spot for recreational activities.
Oak Bay features a selection of excellent restaurants, delis, bistros antique shops, as well as an English-style pub, and other establishments geared towards both families and seniors. You’ll notice the countless amenities down Oak Bay Avenue and throughout the neighbourhoods. There’s a few nearby marina’s if you need to find moorage for your sailboat or boat ramps if you’re still on land.
